Also referred to as Black highlanders, Poprad highlanders live in the River Poprad Valley near Piwniczna-Zdrój and Rytro, mountain hamlets included. This is the only region where men wear black hołośnie (trousers), parzenicas replaced with red trouser stripes as protection against malicious intent. Women wear red beads and ribbons, and błękiciory – skirts of blue cloth brought in from Stará L’ubovňa.

The region used to be famous for black sheep, their husbandry swiftly recovering today. Wool traditionally brought in to church on St. Nicolas’ Day is consecrated and gifted to the most impoverished, who then use it to make łodziate (local folk attire). Local craftsmen are also famous for their manufacturing of excellent (wytrymuśne, to use a local word) gloves. A legacy of historical trade contacts with the Hungarians, the czardas is a dance traditionally popular in the area.
