Pieniny highlanders inhabit the east part of Pieniny Mountains – Czorsztyn to Sromowce Wyżne and Sromowce Niżne, Krościenko on the River Dunajec, down to Szczawnica. Inhabitants of Shlakhtov Ruthenia, Ruthenians – or Lemkos – used to be their neighbours to the east.

The lajbyk – a blue and lavishly embroidered vest – is a piece of attire typical for Pieniny highlander men. These highlanders have been best-known for timber rafting, the contemporary popular tourist attraction (rafting on the River Dunajec) a reference conversion of the olden days.
